Treatment for Bone Loss
Your doctor can perform various bone grafting procedures to restore bone loss from prolonged missing teeth or preserve bone after an extraction, making you a candidate for dental implants.
Oral health can be affected by bone loss in the jaw. Tooth loss, injury, or gum disease can all cause bone loss. While dental implants can restore many smiles, there needs to be sufficient bone for successful treatment. Bone grafting is a common procedure for dental implant patients who require more bone in the jaw or as a part of other oral surgery treatments to improve oral health.
How Does Bone Loss Affect Oral Health?
In a healthy tooth, the root is located beneath the gums and is not usually visible. The root of the tooth holds the tooth in place and stimulates the jaw bone through eating and chewing. This stimulation helps to keep the quality and quantity of bone healthy. Bone loss can occur due to tooth loss, especially a tooth that has been lost for a long time. Gum disease, tumors, infection, and facial trauma injury can also cause bone loss.
Bone loss can affect the balance of the face, as well as chewing and speaking. Sometimes, tooth replacement options like dental implants can become difficult or impossible due to the severity of bone loss. The good news is that many patients who are experiencing bone loss can receive dental implants with a bone grafting procedure. Other oral surgery treatments can include bone grafting procedures too, such as facial trauma.
Types of Anesthesia
Boulder Oral Surgery performs a wide scope of oral surgery procedures and offers many types of anesthesia for the comfort and safety of our patients. The anesthesia used for your procedure will be selected by your oral surgeon. Your health history, personal preference, and unique treatment plan will all be considered when deciding which anesthesia is right for you.
Types of Bone Grafting Treatments
A bone grafting procedure involves applying a solution to the area where bone has been lost and/or where more bone is desired. This solution is composed of granulated bone or other healing agents and can be harvested from your own body or received from a tissue bank. There are many different kinds of bone grafting treatments. Your treatment plan will determine which bone grafting procedure you will receive, which may include one of the following:
- Sinus lift adds more bone to the naturally thin area between the maxillary sinus and the upper jaw.
- Socket preservation involves placing a bone graft immediately following an extraction.
- Ridge expansion adds more height or width to the alveolar ridge, which is what surrounds the teeth.
- Major bone grafting is typically performed on patients experiencing severe bone loss due to trauma, gum disease, tumor, or birth defect.
- Nerve repositioning involves moving the alveolar nerve to avoid potential damage before placing a dental implant.
